Two days after Apple rolled out its new iPhone “Touch ID” fingerprint scanner technology that it claimed would strengthen security, a group of German hackers called the Chaos Computing Club (CCC) says it has cracked the code.

The CCC even posted a video on the Internet showing how it’s done.

If the hack is confirmed it’s a blow to Apple, which was counting on the new technology to set itself apart from rival Samsung and other smartphone makers selling devices running the Android operating system.

The Chaos Computing Club has been critical of biometric security.  Five years ago, the group cloned the fingerprint of a german lawmaker who thought it’d be a great idea by collecting everyone’s unique physical characteristics as a way to combat terrorism.

The CCC’s work might qualify for the prize put up by the website “Is Touch ID hacked Yet”, around $16,000.
