The Danish Zoo that shocked animal lovers by killing a health young giraffe, dissecting him in front of children, and feeding the meat to the lions just a few weeks ago, has now euthanized four healthy lions.  It’s causing outrage among animal lovers around the world.

The Copenhagen Zoo killed a 16-year old male, a female of the same age, and two younger lionesses just 10 months old.  This is being described as part of the Zoo’s “renewal” of breeding stock.  A new male lion had arrived over the weekend, and officials said it would have killed the others anyway.

“Because of the pride of lions’ natural structure and behavior, the zoo has had to euthanize the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves,” read the statement from the Copenhagen Zoo.  Two female lions that reached breeding age (apparently, just in time) will be mated with the new male.

Last month, people around the world were so angry with the Copenhagen Zoo that some (wrongly) sent death threats over the killing of “Marius”.  The 18-month old male giraffe was too closely related to the rest of the zoo’s females, and officials said they had to put him down to prevent inbreeding.  Other zoos outside the Copenhagen Zoo’s networks offered to take Marius, but he was killed, dissected, and fed to lions that were killed this week.
