More than half of the countries in the world are generating electricity with Wind Turbines, with Iceland recently becoming the 100th nation to deploy wind power.  That’s according to a new report from the World Wind Energy Association.

Global wind capacity has now reached over 282 Gigawatts.  44.6 Gigawatts were added in 2012 alone, the most ever added in a single year.

A great deal of Wind Power growth happened in the US and China, 13 Gigawatts each.  Utilities were in a rush to get their American projects completed last year to take advantage of a tax credit.

Overall, Asia accounted for the largest share of new installations, followed by North America, and Europe.

But Australia and Oceania accounted for just 0.8 percent of the world’s Wind Power growth in 2012.  Come on, Oz!  You’re not going to let Iceland beat you, are ya?
