Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced a new citizen-driven process to create a new constitution will begin in September. The goal is to forge a new document to replace the moldy old rag left behind by the fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1981.
“The country has known irregularities, corruption and lack of ethics that affect policies and businesses. That is serious, because our democracy deteriorates and it creates abuses, privileges and inequality,” President Bachelet said on national TV.
The Pinochet constitution has made it next to impossible to eliminate corruption and reactionary old laws that have nothing to do with life in 2015. The new constiution would put anti-corruption methods in place, one of Bachelet’s key pledges during her last presidential campaign. She will also push for 100 percent-transparent public political campaign financing that would eliminate anonymous and reserved donations.
Former radical student leader and current Congress member Camila Vallejo is urging people to take part in the process.
