It’s been a fifth day of protests in Baltimore, Maryland on America’s east coast, after the death of a 25-year old African-American man who was horribly injured in the custody of police.  This time, demonstrators blocked rush hour traffic, and there were scuffles with police.

The demonstrations were overwhelmingly non-violent.  Two protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct and destruction of property after a tense situation, with angry demonstrators yelling and swearing at mostly stoic police officers.  It’s heating up out there, and cops – as usual – aren’t admitting that they’ve done anything wrong.

Officers took down Freddie Grey on 12 April in front of horrified onlookers, some of whom described him as being folded over like an origami.  Video shows Grey’s legs dragging behind him as cops loaded him wailing in pain into a squadrol.  A week later, Freddie Grey died in hospital of a severed spine.  Police have never explained why they came down so hard on him, but claim a knife was found in his pocket at the time of the arrest.

The six cops involved have been suspended, but they’re still being paid.
