After refusing to form a government with Italy’s Center-Left and right wing parliamentary factions, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) is trying to form its own governing coalition.

M5S leader Beppe Grillo presented Italian President Giorgio Napolitano with a 20-point program for governing Italy, including:  A referendum on whether Italy should stay in the eurozone; a new subsidy for the unemployed; and more funding for public health and schools.

Getting to form the government is a long shot.  M5S is the smallest of the three major parties, and Grillo has openly lambasted Napolitano as a symbol of what’s wrong with Italian politics.

The President instead is expected to offer the mandate to the Center-Left coalition, which does have a majority in the lower house.  But if the Center-Left can’t do it, it is likely that elections will be called.
