Last week, Nigeria claimed to have killed the man going by the name Abubakar Shekau, leader of the terrorist group Boko Haram.  Apparently, he got better.  Shekau and Boko Haram released a new video to refute Abuja’s claims and explain what the group is doing now.

“Here I am, alive.  I will only die the day Allah takes my breath,” Shekau said, adding that his group was “running our Islamic caliphate” and administering strict Sharia punishments in captured towns.  There’s no indication of when or where it was recorded, but seems to reference the government’s previous claims of killing him.

Shekau mocked the military, and fired an anti-aircraft gun into the air.  Although his antics in this and other videos have been clownish, Boko Haram is a serious threat.  The group until recently staged hit and run attacks in town in northeastern Nigeria, destroying markets and homes and killing hundreds at a time.  They’ve since changed tactics and are holding on to territory, and the Nigerian military seems unable to or dislodge them.

Boko Haram also kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls and is believed to have sold them as brides.
