Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is “listening to the streets”:  She’s pledging an investment of more than A$27 Billion to improve public transportation, and proposing a referendum on a broad package of reforms to placate more than a week of widespread protests.

Those are the issues that drove more than a million of angry citizens outs into Brazil’s streets.  The people are demanding improvements to social welfare plans and infrastructure in protests that originated as opposition against increases to bus fares.  Brazilians say they have been left out of the picture as the government spends billions of dollars on sporting events such as the 2014 football World Cup.

Rousseff reportedly may propose a constituent assembly to undertake reforms to healthcare, taxation, education, and politics.

Protest leaders have vowed to continue their dissent despite their meetings with the president and a raft of concessions already on the table.
