At least 26 climbers, mostly foreigners, and three local farmers are dead in Nepal.  They got stuck on the high slopes when a blizzard swept through, causing a huge snowfall and avalanches.  The tail end of Cyclone Hudhud turned out to be one of deadlier spells of bad weather to hit the region.

Nepali military rescuers recovered the bodies of four trekkers – two poles, an Israeli, and a Nepali – from the Thorong La pass area on the Annapurna Circuit trekking trail.  An Indian and four Canadian trekkers were buried in an avalanche.  Recovering their bodies will take several days.

Two Slovakian climbers and their three local guides died in an avalanche at base camp at Mount Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh tallest peak.  It was dangerous, even down below the snow line – a French man also died after slipping into the Budhi Gandaki River in heavy rains.
