A prominent Kenyan Muslim cleric who was accused by the United States and United Nations Security Council of being a recruiter for terrorists has been shoe dead in Mombasa, Kenya.  Abubakar Shariff Makaburi is the third Muslim cleric to be killed in Mombasa since 2012.

Some of Makaburi’s supporters rioted in parts of the coastal city as news of the cleric's killing spread.  Makaburi and another man were outside the court waiting to be picked up when another vehicle approached and the men were sprayed with bullets.  Both men died.

The deaths could stir fresh unrest in the coastal area where most of Kenya's Muslims live.  Muslim youths clashed with police for three days in February after a man was killed during a police raid on a mosque used by firebrand preachers.

Kenya is still reeling from an attack by the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab on a shopping mall in Nairobi in September in which at least 67 people were killed.  Makaburi supported al-Shabab and was accused of being a recruiter.

Kenyan police deny that they are to blame for extra-judicial killings.
