Did the College of Cardinals realize that Jorge Mario Bergoglio was such a hippy when they elected him the leader of the often-stodgy old Roman Catholic Church?  Pope Francis told a bunch of new mothers to go ahead and breastfeed their babies at the Vatican.

Pope Francis was presiding over the baptism of 33 babies at the Sistine Chapel, informing the women of what’s more important.

“You mothers give your children milk and even now, if they cry because they are hungry, breastfeed them, don’t worry,” the Pope said.  During the service, the Pontiff also discussed the harsh reality that impoverished mothers around the world are unable to feed their children.  Francis made headlines last year telling an earlier group of women, “If they are hungry, mothers, feed them, without thinking twice.  Because they are the most important people here.”

Here in Oz, that doesn’t seem like a real big deal.  The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 protects Australian Women’s right to breastfeed in public.  But there are other countries out there that really get their undies in a bunch over the matter.  And the Catholic Church in the past didn’t exactly had the most enlightened views on the natural functions of the human body, which is kind of weird considering how many paintings of bare-breasted women and naked dudes the church owns.
