Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong have broken into the territory’s Legislative Council building in the Admiralty District, setting off a confrontation with police who responded with batons and pepper spray.  Four people have been arrested.  The aggressive turn was not welcomed by all who have supported the demonstrations thus far.

“It’s not something we like to see,” said protest leader Lester Shum of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, “We call on occupiers to stick firm to peaceful and non-violent principles and be a responsible participant of the umbrella movement.”

The small group of protesters who smashed their way into the Council building say are frustrated over the lack of progress over their demands, which is for Beijing to allow free elections for Hong Kong chief executive in 2017.  Beijing says only those vetted by a government panel will be allowed to run.  Others were incensed over the court order allowing authorities to clear out part of the Admiralty district protest camp, to allow access to an adjacent office tower.
