Czech Republican lawmakers have narrowly voted to charge conservative President Vaclav Klaus with High Treason for destroying several high-profile corruption cases.

The move appears to be more aimed at posterity, as the worst sentence Klaus will face is removal from the presidency.  His final term as president is already set to end on Thursday anyway.

The straws that broke the camel’s back were Klaus’ mass amnesty for 7,000 prisoners serving sentences of less than a year and suspended sentences; And especially his order to halt prosecution of a dozen corruption cases.

The latter move instantly invalidated corruption cases and opponents accused Klaus of giving “Get Out Of Jail Free” cards to prominent businessmen charged with tax fraud and embezzlement.
