A suicide bomber in dangerous northeastern Nigeria drove a tricycle taxi packed with explosives to an outdoor venue for watching the world cup, and set it off.  A local hospital says it has counted at least seven people killed and 15 with life-threatening injuries, but that death toll is likely to grow as the situation becomes clearer.

This happened in Damaturu town, no stranger to attacks from the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram.  Witnesses said the tricycle taxi in the viewing area just after the Brazil-Mexico match started Tuesday night.  Police and rescuers were being extra cautious about the scene, because the terrorists often set a second explosive to go off after the first in order to kill first responders.

Authorities have been warning people to be extra-cautious at open-air viewing centers – where people pay to watch live soccer – which are very popular throughout Nigeria.  Boko Haram has not yet claimed responsibility, but it’s well-known that the group and other Islamist militants considers soccer to be “un-Islamic”.  The group is believed to be responsible for two other attacks on soccer viewers this year.
