A bridge under construction in the World Cup city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil collapsed into a concrete and steel blanket of death that fell onto a roadway below, crushing the front of a commuter bus and, reportedly, a car.

The accident was captured on a security video from a block away.  At least two people are dead; the driver of the bus and a passenger.  19 more people were injured (Graphic, caution advised for younger and more sensitive viewers), and workers searched the rubble for more victims.  Brazilians are upset that more lives were lost to Brazil’s botched preparations for the World Cup.

This is the incompetence of our authorities and our businesses,” said 23-year old bank worker Leandro Brito who gathered with a crowd of angry people.  “Because of the World Cup they sped everything up to finish faster.  That’s why this tragedy has happened.  They are not making things properly.  Everyone is very angry.”

The bridge is only three kilometers from Belo Horizonte’s Mineirao Stadium where World Cup games were played and a semi-final match is scheduled for next week.  But it’s just one more of several construction and transportation projects that remain incomplete even though the tournament is 75 percent over.  It was supposed to be a special rapid transit lane for buses, which instead had to drive on the surface street below.
