Police in Bangladesh have arrested the fugitive owner of the Rana Plaza building that collapsed last week, killing at least 377 people.

Mohammed Sohel Rana was apprehended near the border with India.  A day earlier, police arrested two owners of garment shops who used space in Rana’s eight-story death trap.  Rana, three garment shop owners, and two engineers are now under arrest.

Police accuse Rana and the factory managers of ignoring pleas of the garment workers and warnings from officials when huge cracks were noticed in the buildings before the collapse.

Workers at the huge debris pile where Rana Plaza used to be cheered at the news.  They’ve been tunneling through the crumbled ferroconcrete blocks, trying to get at more survivors.  Heavy machinery is being brought in, but rescuers have been avoiding using it because they don’t want the rubble to shift and kill any more survivors who might be in air pockets.
