Legendary performer Elton John plans to perform in Russia, in spite of the country’s recent controversial law against so-called “gay propaganda” (whatever that is).  Now, a parents committee is asking President Vladimir Putin to cancel Elton’s concert.

“The singer intends to come out in support of local sodomites and break the current Russian law, directed at protecting children,” the group said in an open letter in local media in the central Ural region.  The group has declined to elaborate to western media.

Several entertainers are refusing to perform in Russia, such as Cher who called her decision as a “no brainer”.  Others like Madonna and Lady Gaga have harshly criticized the law, leading the Kremlin to tighten rules for performers seeking visas to Russia.

But Sir Elton John says he feels he has to perform in Russia in order to support the gay community.

“As a gay man, I can't leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don't know what's going to happen, but I've got to go,” he said in the interview.

Elton John is scheduled to perform on 6 December in Moscow and 7 December in Kazan.
