A day after blasting them with tough talk, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is planning to meet the organizers of ongoing protests against his government on Wednesday.

What grew into nationwide anti-government unrest was sparked by a police crackdown on a local protest over Erdogan’s plans to build a police barracks and mall in an Istanbul park.

Erdogan had taken to calling the mostly peaceful demonstrators “looters” and “vandals”, earning parody in the form of t-shirts bearing those words appearing throughout the protests.

Even though Erdogan claimed his patience was “limited”, Deputy PM Bulent Arinc now says, “The prime minister gave an appointment to representatives of some of the groups that have been organizing these protests - he will meet some of them on Wednesday upon their request and he will meet other groups in the coming days.”

But Arinc warned, “Illegal demonstrations will not be allowed anymore in Turkey.”
