A supervisor at a strawberry farm in southwestern Greece picked up a rifle and opened fire on Bangladeshi farm workers.  About thirty workers were injured and were transferred to local hospitals.  Twelve of the workers are in serious condition and the rest are slightly injured.

It all started when two to three hundred farm workers gathered to demand the payment of six months of unpaid back wages.  The meeting didn’t go well and one of the supervisors picked up the rifle and shot into the crowd.

Police arrested the owner of the farm, and are looking for three supervisors who fled the scene.

Despite Greece’s widespread unemployment, it is dependent on migrant workers to get its crops picked and processed.  A strike in 2008 brought attention to the abuses, racism, and slave-like conditions the workers have to deal with.
