A judge in Steubenville, Ohio found two High School Football stars guilty to raping a female acquaintance.  The crime outraged America because it was recorded on a cell phone video that was notoriously distributed around the Internet.

17-year-old Trent Mays was also found guilty of disseminating the images.  Mays and 16-year-old Ma’lik Richmond were sentenced to 2 years and 1 year respectively in juvenile detention.  But the length of the sentences is up to the Juvenile Authority and the boys could remain incarcerated until they’re 21 years old.

The case sparked outrage through the United States, initially because of the graphic images of the boys assaulting a younger girl who had passed out because of drinking too much.  But also because of a feeling that the boys were initially shielded from prosecution in a town that prizes football as its main cultural asset.
