A US diplomat arrested by Russian police for alleged spying has been declared “persona non grata” and has left the country.

Ryan Fogle was ordered to leave Russia five days ago after being accused of trying to recruit a Russian intelligence officer as a spy.  Fogle was allegedly trying to get more information on insurgents in Russia’s Chechnya and Dagestan regions that were cited as the inspiration for the alleged Boston marathon bombers.

At the time of his arrest, Russian police paraded Fogle in front of the news cameras wearing a blonde wig, and displayed his alleged spy kit that included the ill-fitting wig, a compass, maps, and other items.  The archaic and amateurish nature of the items led some observers to speculate they didn’t belong to Fogle at all, but were put there by Russian security agents to make Fogle appear to be incompetent.  The US has barely commented on the situation, except to confirm that Fogle worked at the US Embassy in Moscow.
