A senior Israeli official early Monday says there’s no need for any more truces in the Gaza conflict.  This comes after a Sunday filled with both sides making attempts to extend a break in the fighting – both sides breaking those attempts by shooting things at each other.  The death toll soars, and it’s mostly civilians doing the dying.

In Gaza, 20-days of war has killed more than 1,030 people”.  The UN had earlier said that civilians made up 74 percent of the fatalities.  Thousands are wounded.  On the Israeli side, 43 soldiers have been killed, as have two civilians, and one Thai national.

Israel is now acknowledging that one of its mortar shells struck a United Nations school in Gaza where hundreds of Palestinian civilians were taking shelter.  16 people were killed and 200 were wounded (Warning: Graphic video – war is awful).  Earlier, the Israeli government and military said that it could have been a Hamas rocket that struck the school.  But now Israel is insisting that the shell, which it says was an error, didn’t kill anyone.  Palestinians said at least three shells hit the school, and journalists documented the bodies and blood stained floor and playground outside the school.

Late Sunday night in New York City, the UN Security Council called for an "immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire" in Gaza.
