It turns out that some things are so crazy, you can’t say them even on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News.  A supposed “expert” on terrorism was forced to apologize after claiming that Birmingham, England was a “Muslim-only city” where non-Muslims fear to tread.

Stephen Emerson, the founder of a group called The Investigative Project on Terrorism, gave this wholly inaccurate perspective while commenting on the terror attacks in France on the Fox show hosted by Jeanine Pirro.  In fact, Birmingham is a popular destination for South Asian immigrants to the UK, but only about 20 percent of the population is Muslim – about the same amount as atheists and agnostics.

Emerson then preceded to tell Fox’s largely rural viewers that London has “Muslim religious police” who will beat “anyone who doesn't dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim attire”.

Brummies, Londoners, and everyone with more than two brain cells weren’t about to take that nonsense lying down, and the hashtag #FoxNewsFacts was born.  Twitter exploded with sarcasm and criticism.  This one is my favorite, but you might have to be a certain age to fully appreciate it.  This one is good.  So’s this.  And here’s a collection.

“I have clearly made a terrible error for which I am deeply sorry.  My comments about Birmingham were totally in error,” Emerson said in an apology, and he offered to make a donation to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
