Despite recent reports of Nelson Mandela’s condition improving, it’s now know that the anti-apartheid hero is in critical condition in hospital in Pretoria.

The 94-year old has been in hospital for more than two weeks, admitted with a lung infection.  It’s his third time this year.

Doctors now say his condition has worsened in the last 24 hours, and there are reports he is unresponsive.

Mandela is revered around the world for the fight against apartheid, for which he spent 27 years as a political prisoner but also was awarded the Nobel Prize.  It is believed he suffered lung damage while working in a prison quarry, and later contracted tuberculosis while held in another prison on a windswept island.
