Bail is set at $2 Million for a young man accused of attacking Japanese tourists in Guam with his car and a knife.  Two women were stabbed to death and 11 people are recovering from various injuries.

Authorities say 21–year old Chad Ryan DeSoto crashed his Toyota Yaris into a crowd of tourists near the Hard Rock Café and Outrigger Hotel in Guam’s Tumon district.  Six people were injured by the car, and eight with the knife.  The two women stabbed to death are identified as 81-year-old Kazuko Uehara and 29-year-old Rie Sugiyama.  Authorities say DeSoto stabbed Sugiyama’s infant son, who is expected to recover.

Police say DeSoto confessed at the scene and said he wanted to do as much damage as possible.

The Guam Visitor’s Bureau is telling everyone who’ll listen that this is an extremely isolated incident, and has long been known as one of the safest destinations in the region.  And they’re getting that word out there for good reason:  Japanese make up 73% of Guam’s tourist traffic, and a great many restaurants and tourist businesses are geared to attract them.  The rampage is all over the Japanese newspapers and leading the broadcast news reports.

UPDATE:  Guam authorities say a 51-year old man has died as a result of being struck by DeSoto's car, bringing the death toll to three lives lost.
