A gunman in camouflage shot and killed three police officers on the suburban streets of the far eastern Canadian city of Moncton, New Brunswick.  Two other Mounties were wounded.  The heavily armed shooter was still at large hours after the violent attack.

Police tweeted a photo of the man they’re looking for, 24-year old Justin Bourque.  He’s seen in camos and carrying two long rifles.  For obvious reasons, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in New Brunswick say Bourque is considered armed and dangerous.

Residents heard the shots at around 8:00 on Wednesday evening, and say Bourque was standing in the middle of the street firing on officers.  They also say the weapon sounded like a fully automatic gun, but that will be sorted out later.  Cops think he’s still in the same subdivision and have blocked off streets in the area.

Violence and gunplay are exceedingly rare in Canada, especially on the east coast.  This approaches the RCMP’s worst single-day loss of life, when four cops were killed ina  shootout on an Alberta farm in 2005.
