Another attempt at a ceasefire in Gaza is to begin at 8:00 AM in the morning, local time, and hopefully will last longer than the full 72 hours proposed.  Israel, Hamas, and other Palestinian factions agreed to the proposal made by Egypt, which will host face-to-face negotiations in Cairo once the truce takes hold.

Israeli authorities reported two incidents being called terrorist attacks.  In one, a backhoe operator – described by authorities as a Palestinian – went berserk, ran over a Jewish pedestrian, and attacked a passenger bus on the road separating Jews from Arabs in East Jerusalem.  He managed to tip over the bus, but police shot him dead.  A short time later and also in Jerusalem, a gunman shot and wounded an Israeli soldier before fleeing on a motorcycle, according to police.

In Gaza, Palestinians said Israel had bombed a refugee camp in Gaza City, killing an eight-year-old girl and wounding 29 other people.  The death toll in Gaza is 1,834 – mostly civilians – and thousands more are injured.  The United Nations says almost 273,000 people are displaced.

Human Rights Watch is investigating three incidents in which Israeli forces allegedly fired on unarmed civilians, terming them possible war crimes.  The accusations stem from Israel’s attack on Khuza’a in southern Gaza between 23 and 25 July, and in each case civilians had their hands raised and were flying white flags, trying to get to UN refugee centers.

The Gaza conflict is costing Israel and Hamas friends.  Most of their neighbors are backing Israel against Hamas, though expressing outrage over the death toll in Gaza.  And Spain is now the second country to cut off arms sales to Israel in the past 24 hours, after Britain said it was reviewing all arms export licenses to Israel.
