A worker who escaped the massive fire that killed 119 people in a Chinese poultry rendering plant says all of the facility’s exits were closed and lock save for one side door.

The fire broke out early Monday morning in a workshop owned by the Jilin Baoyuanfeng Poultry Company in Dehui City in China’s far northeast.  Local officials said if was caused by a buildup of ammonia gas.

Witnesses say 300 workers were inside the plant when a large flash and loud bang occurred, followed by fire and thick, black smoke.

A worker interviewed by the Chinese newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily said the moved faster through the locked than people could get out of its way.

“The blaze ran through the whole workshop within three minutes, and fewer than 30 persons escaped.”

At least 54 people were injured.

President Xi Jinping, on a visit to Latin America and the US, is calling for an aggressive investigation and for authorities to ascertain the cause of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.
