Brazilian police arrested a director from a FIFA partner company handling World Cup ticket packages for allegedly working with a criminal network that was illegally selling game passes that were never meant for the public.

Officers picked up British executive Ray Whelan at the glitzy Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, where Sepp Blatter and other officials from the world’s football governing body are also staying.  He’s not directly employed by FIFA, but rather leads “Match Contacts” which is described as a “hospitality provider” with FIFA contracts.

Last week, police arrested eleven alleged members of a gang for allegedly scalping tickets to tourists that were meant for players and sponsors.  Cops say the gang might have made as much as $100 Million per tournament, and had been in operation for at least four tournaments.  Among items seized during the arrests last week were 100 tickets, computers, US dollars, mobile phones, and documents.
