Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’ health problems just seem to be getting worse.  A spokesman in Caracas says he’s now suffering a new infection following cancer surgery, and top officials have gathered in the capital city.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said "The commander-president remains clinging to Christ and to life, conscious of the difficulties that he is facing, and complying strictly with the program designed by his medical team."

58-year old Chavez is believed to be suffering cancer in his pelvic area, although the government has not released the exact type.

He has been president for 14 years, and said Venezuelan voters ought to choose Vice President Nicolas Maduro as his successor.

Venezuela’s constitution calls for snap elections if the president dies or is incapacitated while in office.
