Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) wants talks with the candidates in the country’s disputed Presidential Elections.  Both Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto are claiming victory, although independent pollsters say one man is the likely winner.

And that likely winner would be Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, whose populist campaign against corruption brought him widespread popularity among young voters.  Eight polling companies – including Indonesia’s three most reputable – show Widodo winning with 52 per cent of the vote.  Two other polling agencies give it to Subianto, although those two are believed to be alreadu aligned with the former general.

“Today a new history was created.  This is a new chapter for Indonesia,” said Widodi in front of supporters in Jakarta Park, adding that the results are a “victory of all Indonesians.”

Subianto seems to have already adopted a defensive stance in an address to his party.

“We are asking all members, supporters of the red and white coalition and all the people of Indonesia to monitor and guard this victory all the way until the official counting is done,” Subianto said.

The official results won’t be formalized until 22 July, and the inauguration is set for October.
