Thousands of Israeli soldiers launched a ground invasion into the Gaza Strip.  It’s the long-expected escalation of Israel’s military operation that aims to destroy Hamas’ weapons arsenal and tunnel network that infiltrate Israel's territory.  Several deaths and injuries are already reported.

“A large IDF force has just launched a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.  A new phase of Operation Protective Edge has begun,” went the announcement from the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).

Armored vehicles, artillery, and intelligence units as well as infantry soldiers have moved into Gaza in well-coordinated operations along with the air force and navy.  Missiles cleared the way.  The invasion is open-ended and will involve several fronts.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t appear on television as the invasion began, but members of his cabinet did.

“With a heavy heart we embarked on this operation, in order to destroy the tunnels, as just this morning we have seen their deadly potential,” said Economic Minister Naftali Bennett of the ultra-right-wing Jewish Home party.  “Difficult days are ahead of us.”

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the invasion “a dangerous step.”

“The occupation will pay its price expensively,” he said, referring to Israel, “and Hamas is ready for confrontation.”
