Authorities in Nigeria arrested three radio journalists for inciting violence by claiming that polio immunisations were an anti-Islam Western conspiracy.  Shortly after their broadcast, terrorists on motorbikes murdered 9 healthcare workers associated with the immunisation program.  The Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which condemns education and what it sees and western conspiracies, is suspected.

Police arrested the journalists for saying the Polio vaccines are anti-Islam and a Western conspiracy to cause infertility in women.

Most of the world has been rid of Polio since the 1950s, and only Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan still have problems with it.  Polio cripples afflicted children, sometimes within hours of infection.  The World Health Organisation says 121 new cases of Polio were reported in Nigeria last year.

In 2003, Muslim leaders in the same region of northern Nigeria railed against polio vaccinations, claiming they could cause infertility and AIDS.  That panic is blamed for a resurgence of the disease in parts of Africa that had previously been declared free of the scourge.
