The Ted Conference in Southern California is wrapping up after hearing from inventors and visionaries from around the world.  One of the highlights came in the presentation from a 13-year old Kenyan boy who just wanted to keep the Lions away from his family’s Cattle.

It’s Richard Turere’s responsibility to keep his family’s livelihood safe from Africa’s many predators.  Scarecrows weren’t working.  But a couple of years ago, he noticed that Lions became skittish at night when confronted with people walking around with flashlights.

He gathered some LED lights, rigged them to flash on and off, and powered them with a battery and Solar Power charger that fed the battery during the daylight hours.

"I did it myself, no one taught me, I just came up with it," Turere said. "I had to look after my dad's cows and make sure that they were safe."

Mind you, he did this BEFORE he even became a teenager.  Turere’s "Lion Lights" system is now widely used by ranchers in the region who now keep their Cattle safe without having to go out and kill Lions.

Turere got a trip to California to present his invention to the annual conference that links Technology, Entertainment, and Design.  He also got a scholarship to a prestigious school in Nairobi to continue his studies.
