US Secretary of State John Kerry is planning to go to Kiev on Tuesday, and earlier had threatened possibly economic and diplomatic retaliation for Russia’s advances in Ukraine.  It’s not yet clear that the US has support for such measures.

Making the rounds of the American Sunday morning news shows, Kerry Economic sanctions and travel restrictions on individual Russians are one possibility, as is a U.S. and European boycott of planning meetings this week for the upcoming summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial nations in Russia.

“You just don't in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pre-text,” he told CBS’ Face the Nation, without the slightest hint of irony.

Kerry spoke of the consequences to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“He’s going to lose on the international stage,” the Secretary said on NBC’s Meet the Press.  “Russia is going to lose, the Russian people are going to lose, and he’s going to lose all of the glow that came out of the Olympics, his $60 billion extravaganza.”

One of the possible sanctions discussed included kicking Russia out of the Group of Eight.  But across the ocean, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged G8 members to rethink stripping Russia of its membership.

“The format of the G8 is actually the only one in which we in the West can speak directly with Russia,” Steinmeier said.  “Should we really give up this unique format?”
