Wednesday’s christening of Prince George in London will break with royal tradition.  Just five members of the royal family have been invited to what is being described as an “intimate” ceremony.

Although well-wishers are already camped out outside Saint James Palace, this is not going to be a major state affair; more like a simpler gathering of family and friends.  The only members of the Royal family who will be there (apart from Prince George and his parents) are the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s choice of the Chapel Royal at Saint James Palace necessitated the pared-down guest list.  There’s room for about 50 people.  Usually, the much larger Music Room of Buckingham Palace would be used for a royal soiree.

The names of Prince George's godparents will be announced before the ceremony.
