At least six Australians are believed to be among the 239 passengers and crew aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 which disappeared somewhere between Kuala Lampur and its destination Beijing.  Travelers from New Zealand, America, and Canada were also on the passenger list.

“At the moment we have no idea where this aircraft is right now,” Malaysia Airlines Vice President of Operations Control Fuad Sharuji told CNN.

The plane is a Boeing 777-200, which took off at 12:41 AM.  Air traffic controllers lost contact with it about 2 hours later at 2:40 AM.  Vietnamese officials at first indicated a signal from the flight was detected in the waters off of its southernmost tip, but later backtracked that.  Chinese officials say the flight did not enter their airspace, but expressed concern.

“We are extremely worried upon hearing this news,” said Qin Gang, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.  “We are currently in contact with relevant parties and are doing what we can to understand and confirm relevant circumstances.”
