A 60-year old Serbian Military veteran with a handgun shot and killed 13 people in a rampage outside Belgrade.  Many of the victims appear to be members of the gunman’s extended family.

Police are looking for a motive.  Witnesses say Ljubisa Bogdanovic first killed his son and mother in the pre-dawn hours, and then went from house to house killing.

“Most of the victims were shot while they were asleep,” Serbian police chief Milorad Veljovic told reporters.  “The most harrowing scene discovered by police was the dead bodies of a young mother and her two-year-old son.”

Those victims are believed to be the gunman’s cousins.  The gunman attempted to shoot himself and his wife, they've been taken to hospital.

Although the local hospital says that Bogdanovic had no history of mental illness, a neighbor said the man's father had hanged himself when he was a young boy and his uncle had a history of mental illness.

The gunman was a combat veteran of some of the worst fighting in the Balkan wars of the 1990s. Bogdanovic fought as a Serb soldier in the war in Vukovar, Croatia, a town destroyed in a massive Serbian-led army offensive that saw the massacre of hundreds of Croat civilians.

Bogdanovic had also recently lost his job.
