Authorities in Kenya are searching for dozens of mentally ill patients who escaped from a notorious mental hospital that international human rights advocates had long complained about.

More than seventy patients were part of the initial breakout from the Mathari Mental Hospital in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Initial reports say they overpowered guards and made it out. 35 did not leave the hospital grounds.  Ten have been found.  The search is on for the remaining thirty.

The patients involved in the breakout had earlier complained that the drugs they were being given were ineffective.

In 2011, rights groups called for an investigation into alleged human rights abuses at the hospital following a CNN documentary "Locked up and Forgotten".

Mental health care in Kenya suffers from a lack of funding. Poverty, a lack of access and the stigma associated with mental disorders prevent many patients from getting good assistance.
