A passenger plane crashed and burned while trying to land at an airport off of Taiwan during the tail end of a typhoon. TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 was carrying 58 passengers and crew when it crashed in the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and Mainland China, and believed no more than ten people survived.

The pilot aborted the first attempt at landing at the airport in Xixi village and asked for a go around.  Shortly after that, local residents say they saw the twin-engine turboprop ATR-72 aircraft crash and burst into flames.  Emergency crews are still searching for victims.  At least 42 people have been founded.  But other than the ten people rushed to the local hospital, there are believed to be no other survivors.

No Australians were on Flight GE222.  TransAsia – Taiwan’s first domestic airline after 1951 – has organized two flights for families of the victims to go to Penghu.
