Health officials are urging Aussies to consider getting vaccinated against a new strain go H1N1 swine flu going around.  The new variant is resistant to Tamiflu, one of the most used treatments for influenza.

Experts at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases heard how the 'H1N1pdm09' swine flu virus is still sensitive to another antiviral drug Relenza (zanamivir).

But vaccines can prevent people from getting infected in the first place.  And there are murmurs in Canberra over whether the government should fund vaccines for young people.

The Tamiflu-resistant strain only affects about 2 percent of people with swine flu in Oz.  But health experts say it’s “fitter” than other infections and has the potential to go world-wide.
