The United States and China have introduced new sanctions on North Korea in response to last month’s test of a nuclear bomb.  The sanctions are designed to curb Pyongyang’s financial transactions, and limit North Korean leaders’ ability to buy luxury items like yachts and racecars.  The Russian ambassador to the United Nations indicated his country’s support.

China’s outgoing Prime Minister Wen Jiabao gave his final address to 3,000 delegates at the National People’s Congress in Beijing.  Wen warned against the growing class division between rich and poor, the degrading environment, and unbalanced economic growth.  All of that pretty much happened on his watch over the past ten years.

Malaysian forces are going door to door to find the followers of a self-styled Islamic Sultan from the Southern Philippines who are trying to occupy the Malaysian state of Sabah.  It follows aerial and ground attacks.  At least 31 people have been killed, but that number was from before the air strikes.

Uruhu Kenyatta has pulled ahead as votes are counted from the presidential election in Kenya.  That’s a problem, because Kenyatta is on trial before the International Criminal Court next month, accused of organizing the mass violence that killed more than 1,000 people the last time Kenya tried to have a presidential poll.

Russia will proceed with the trial of Sergei Magnitsky, despite the fact the defendant is dead.  Critics say the show trial is politically motivated revenge against the whistle blower who exposed massive tax fraud by Russian officials.  Magnitsky died in state custody in 2009 after allegedly being beaten.
