Police say they had no choice but to shoot and kill an 18-year old “known terror suspect” who pulled a knife and stabbed two officers at the Endeavour Hills police station, in Melbourne’s outer southeast.  The “unprovoked attack” came after he was called to the station to answer some questions.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said the 18-year old had just arrived and attacked a police officer who tried to shake his hand.

“When our police members have approached this young man, one's extended his hand to shake his hand and the response has been he's been stabbed in the arm," Lay said.  “The attacker then turned on the second police member and stabbed him three or four times in the body and in the head.”

That’s when the first officer drew his weapon and shot the teen.  Both officers required surgery but were in stable condition in hospital today.

“Whilst this is a horrible incident we do need to remain calm and go about our daily lives,” said federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan, who added the teen had his passport cancelled because he was already a “known terror suspect” and a “person of interest” to law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Somewhere in that mess, the teen reportedly threatened Prime Minister Tony Abbott.  Police say the youth belongs to a radical Islamist group called “al-Furqan”, which is based in Springvale, VIC.  Authorities carried out a rain on the group in 2012.
