Police and Gendarmes in France are conducting a vast manhunt for the gunman who attacked the Liberation newspaper and fired outside the headquarters of the Societe Generale bank.  The gunman then forced a motorist to drive him to the Champs Elysees before running off.

The same man is suspected of breaking into the Paris offices of the 24-hour news channel BFMTV last week.  Police are now stationed outside all media offices in Paris.

The same gunman, described as a 35 to 45 year old European male between 1.7 and 1.8 meters tall with salt and pepper hair, had walked into the 24-hour news channel BFMTV on Friday morning and emptying the chamber of his gun in the reception area.

“Next time, I will not miss you,” the man had said to an editor he threatened.

Right now, his identity and motivation are a mystery.  Investigators say his clothing, weapon, and posture are indicative of a hunter, or at least someone familiar with hunting.

“When you have someone with a shotgun coming into a newspaper's offices in a democracy, it is very, very serious, whatever the mental state of the person,” said the company president of Liberation, Mr. Nicolas Demorand.

“If papers and other media have to become bunkers, something has gone wrong in our society.”
