Queen Elizabeth is recovering in King Edward VII Hospital in London with a case of gastroenteritis.  Buckingham Palace says she checked in Sunday afternoon and is in good spirits.

This has the palace canceling all of her engagements for the week, which had included a two-day trip to Rome and Italian President Giorgio Napalitano.  They’d already called off a trip to Swansea, Wales and a medal presentation in Windsor Castle.

Gastroenteritis causes inflammation of the stomach lining and intestines.

The infection can be transmitted through contact with an infected person or contaminated food and drink. Symptoms can include vomiting, fever and stomachache.

The Queen will remain under observation for a couple of days.
