Seventy top clothing retailers are promising to open their factories in Bangladesh to safety inspections as part of a pact that grew out of April’s horrific and deadly collapse of a garment factory.

The mainly European retailers including giants like H&M, Benetton, and Primark came to the accord spearheaded by Labour umbrella groups, including Swiss-based IndustriALL and UNI Global UnionKmart Australia is also part of the group agreeing to underwrite repairs and renovations, if the inspections show any of the factories to be unsafe.  US retailers Walmart and the Gap are not taking part.

The collapse of Rana Plaza in April killed 1,129 people and stands as one of the world's worst industrial disasters.
