A ferry that was carrying at least 200 people capsized and sank in Bangladesh in bad weather on the Meghna River south of the capital Dhaka.  So far, 22 bodies have been recovered and it’s feared that scores more are dead.

About 40 people were able to jump off and swim to shore or to otherwise make it out alive on lifeboats.  But the wind was blowing pretty hard, and the passengers were huddled below to escape the nasty weather.  Once the vessel began to tip, officials say it went over pretty quickly, and Bangladesh's water transport authority chief Shamsuddoha Khandaker expects to find most of the dead still inside the vessel.

“It is a mid-sized ferry and was about 90 feet long.  It can carry around 500 passengers without cargo.  But from what we have gathered so far, it was carrying around 150-200 passengers at the time of the accident,” Khandaker said.

The MV Miraz sank 17 meters to the bed of the river, and rescuers have not been able to move it.  But two salvage ships will attempt to drag it ashore.  Investigators will then try to determine if the vessel was overloaded with cargo or was otherwise compromised.
