A passenger bus crashed head-on into a truck carrying good in southern Pakistan, killing at least 57 people.  Journalists and rescuers at the scene say most of the fatalities were women and at least twelve children, and more than a dozen people were injured – several of them in critical condition.

This happened near the city of Khairpur in Sindh province. The bus crossed over to the other lane, and slammed into the truck that was coming in the opposite direction.  Investigators will have to sift through wreckage while weighing the negative conditions at the time:  Morning fog reportedly covered the highway when the vehicles collided.

And the roads in Sindh province are in notoriously poor condition, especially the N-5 National Highway on which this crash occurred.  The road is broken is several places, forcing drivers to make unauthorized and creative U-turns to avoid impassable roads.  That in turn leads to crashes and congestion.
