Vietnamese officials say one of their aircraft spotted what could be part of a door off of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 floating in the Gulf of Thailand.  If so, it’s the only piece of physical evidence that has been seen of the Boeing 777-200 carrying 239 people, including six Australians.

The fragment was located floating 90 kilometers south of the Tho Chu Islands.  In addition to the item that appeared to be the interior of a door, the Vietnamese searchers believe they saw part of the 777’s tail.  But this possible break comes as Malaysia’s military says the flight may have turned around, putting it on the west side of the Malay Peninsula in the Andaman Sea, so the search area continues to be broad.

Meanwhile, authorities say they have imagery from the airport’s security camera of two passengers who flew with stolen passports purchasing tickets for the flight at the same time.  The passengers appear to be Asian, and the stolen passports were stolen from an Italian and an Austrian.  That’s prompting criticism from Malaysia’s Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who says he is “perturbed” at immigration officials who should have been paying closer attention.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was cruising at 11,000 meters when it apparently fell from the sky early on 8 March.
