Fire in a rural area of South Korea swept a hospital for chronically ill elderly people, killing 20 patients and injuring eight more people. It’s the second major fire of the week and it comes as South Koreans still mourn the hundred killed in the Sewol Ferry Disaster.

The fire itself was doused fairly quickly.  But the death toll was high because most of the patients on the second floor were not able to escape on their own power, having been admitted for long-term care for conditions such as stroke or elderly dementia.  The local fire department says most died of smoke inhalation.

Eight people were killed on Monday and 20 were injured in a fire at a bus station and shopping center outside Seoul.  Firefighters believe that blaze by welders in a basement construction site where seven of the dead were found.

These come after the sinking of the Sewol Ferry in April which left more than 300 people dead or missing.  President Park Geun-hye has repeatedly apologized for that disaster and promised to improve national safety standards.
